COMPARE FEATURES
How to compare features without being misled
Two listings can look equally impressive and say very different things once you read the details. A short, consistent checklist turns marketing language into numbers you can compare.
Editorial note. This guide explains what to compare; it does not rank products. We have not personally tested the products sold by our affiliate partners and never describe a product as tested unless we have genuinely tested it.

Compare the same things, in the same order
Open the listings side by side and fill in the same rows for each one. If a listing does not answer a row, treat that as information too: a seller who gives exact dimensions and a named material is easier to trust than one who relies on adjectives. Decide beforehand which three features are must-haves for you and which are only nice to have, so a long feature list does not decide for you.
The comparison table
| Feature | Why it matters | What a clear listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Designs differ for external, vaginal and anal use. | The use is stated in plain words, with any warnings. |
| Size and weight | Affects comfort, grip and storage. | Total and usable length, width, weight, in mm/cm and g. |
| Material | Determines care and what touches the body. | A named material, not “premium” or “skin-friendly”. |
| Power source | Affects running cost and convenience. | Rechargeable or batteries, charge time, runtime, cable type. |
| Controls | Decides how easy it is to use. | Button layout, intensity steps up and down, memory, lock. |
| Water resistance | Decides how it can be cleaned. | An IPX rating and the maker's care instructions. |
| Noise | Matters if you share a home. | A dB figure with distance and intensity, or a clear description. |
| App and connectivity | Adds convenience and privacy questions. | Works without the app, permissions listed, privacy policy. |
| Warranty and support | Matters if something fails. | Length of warranty, how to claim, spare parts. |
| Total cost | The listed price is not the whole cost. | Price plus lubricant, storage, delivery and returns. |
Power and charging
Check how the product is powered and how long it lasts. A runtime figure only helps if the intensity it refers to is stated. Look at the charging method, such as a standard cable or a proprietary magnetic one, because a proprietary charger can be hard to replace. Also check whether the product may be used while charging and whether a charger is included.
Controls and ease of use
Read the control description carefully. Can intensity go down as well as up? Are the buttons easy to find by touch? Does the product remember its last setting, or does it always start high? Is there a travel lock? If grip or dexterity matter to you, weight and button size matter more than the number of patterns.
What an IPX rating means
IPX ratings come from the international IEC 60529 standard, which describes protection against water. A higher number means protection against more water, but it is not a statement about cleaning. For example, IPX7 means the product has been tested for temporary immersion in water, typically up to one metre for thirty minutes, yet it does not mean you can boil it or put it in a dishwasher. The maker's care instructions still decide how to clean it. “Waterproof” with no rating is not something you can check.
Noise and discretion
Use a figure only when its distance and intensity are stated, and prefer descriptions that tell you whether the sound is a low rumble or a high buzz. Our noise and discreet-use guide explains how to read these claims.
Connected products: ask about the app
An app can add convenience, but it also adds questions. Before you buy, check:
- Does the product work without the app, with no account?
- Which permissions does the app ask for, and are they all necessary?
- Is there a readable privacy policy that says what data is collected and where it is stored?
- What name does the product show when pairing, and what appears on your lock screen?
- Are security and firmware updates provided, and for how long?
If you cannot find answers, treat a missing answer as a reason to prefer a simpler product. Our discreet-delivery guide covers the privacy of the order itself.
Warranty, support and returns
Compare how long the warranty lasts, how a claim is made, whether spare parts are sold and what happens to a product with a broken seal. Consumer law gives rights for faulty goods in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, but the details differ, so read the merchant's terms and your country's official consumer information. Hygiene products may be excluded from change-of-mind returns once opened.
Work out the total cost
Add the price of the product, a compatible lubricant, storage, delivery and any replacement parts. A discount means little if the return conditions are poor or key specifications are missing.
Claims to treat with caution
- “Clinically proven”, “doctor approved” or “medical grade” with no named study or certificate.
- Guaranteed results or “the only product that…”.
- Countdown timers and “only 2 left” messages that restart on each visit.
- Reviews you cannot check, or a rating with no indication of how it was gathered.
Frequently asked questions
Do more vibration patterns mean a better product?
Not necessarily. A long list of patterns does not show better performance, and a smaller number of well-designed intensity steps can be easier to use.
Do I need an app?
No. Many products work well with simple buttons. An app can be useful for some people, but it brings data and privacy questions, so choose it deliberately.
What does IPX7 mean?
It describes tested protection against temporary immersion in water, typically up to one metre for thirty minutes. It does not tell you how to clean the product; follow the maker's instructions.
Is a higher price a sign of better quality?
Not by itself. Look for named materials, clear specifications, understandable support terms and care instructions, rather than relying on price.
